In Konstanz the mediation between tradition and modernity has succeeded in an exemplary manner. The legacy of a historically rich town blends with new urban ideas into an economic and cultural regional center. The shopping here is an experience by the unique atmosphere of the historical backdrop and the largest shopping center on the lake, which is located on the edge of the old town.
With the general University (since 2007 “Excellent University”) and the University of Applied Sciences (HTWG) , the city offers attractive educational and research opportunities with international appeal. The theater, the symphony, the Cultural Center of the Cathedral, the museums and a number of private initiatives offer a rich cultural life. Finally many wonderful
destinations attract for a trip into the nature.
In the economic sector, the city recorded remarkable focus and development of new technologies and modern services. There are many companies that can demonstrate innovative services in numerous sectors. These companies are a sign that the city has developed into a business location with high momentum.
For the citizens and for its guests Konstanz offers a high quality of life. This is due not only to the beautiful lakeside location, but also due to an exemplary infrastructure in many areas, such as establishments with care services for children, schools, health care, public transport, or the wide variety of cultural and recreational facilities for young and old.
The concept of sustainability is in the center of the work of the new mayor Uli Burchardt. Mainly due to the special geographical situation and the sensitive location on the lake, Konstanz is particularly reliant on thinking sustainably. In his opinion Konstanz has a very special opportunity to play a pioneering role and to show how sustainability concrete can work communally.
His focuses are not just the environmental area on the subject of climate change, or economic issues where it comes to the development and the social value of renewable energy, but also the social climate of a city: He is haunting the question of how we want to live together? How we want to make our community such that for all citizens in the future it is worth living? The focus is the attempt to rethink environmental, economic and social and to bring it into balance.
